Privacy Policy

Last Updated: June 20, 2025

Hello! This is the privacy policy for The Slow Net ("the Service"). This project is operated by me, Austin Vande Cappelle, as an independent creator based in Alberta, Canada. I am committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about how I handle your personal information. This policy outlines my practices in accordance with Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).

1. Accountability

As the operator of this project, I, Austin Vande Cappelle, am responsible for the personal information under my control. If you have any questions or concerns about this policy or your data, please contact me at contact@austinvc.ca.

2. What I Collect and Why (Identifying Purposes)

I only collect information that is necessary to provide you with the Service. The purposes for collecting personal information are identified before or at the time of collection.

  • Account Information: When you sign up with a third-party provider like Google or GitHub, I receive your email address and name. This is used solely to create and manage your account, with your email serving as the primary identifier.
  • Profile Information: To use the Service, you must provide a unique "SlowNet Name" (`display_name`). This is stored in your profile and is used for your public alias and email forwarding address.
  • Site Content: To create your personal page, you may provide information such as a bio, an avatar URL, your location, and your current mood. You can further customize your page by adding various content blocks, which may contain personal information, such as text, links, quotes, images, videos, book details, and what you are "currently" reading, listening to, or thinking about. This information is stored in our database and is displayed on your public-facing site. (`theslow.net/your-name`).
  • Forwarding Information: To use the email forwarding tool, you must provide the personal email address where you wish to receive forwarded mail. This is used solely to provide that service and is not used for any other purpose.
  • Essential Cookies: I use cookies provided by Supabase to securely manage your login session. These are necessary for the site to function and are not used for tracking or advertising. You can learn more in our Cookie Consent banner.

3. Your Consent

By signing up for an account and using the features of The Slow Net, you are providing meaningful consent for the collection and use of your information for the purposes outlined in this policy. When you enable a specific feature, like email forwarding or making your site public, your consent is confirmed for that specific purpose. You can withdraw your consent at any time by disabling features or deleting your account.

4. Use, Disclosure, and Retention of Your Data

Your information is not sold or rented to third parties. It is only disclosed to the essential third-party services listed below, who help me operate The Slow Net. I only retain your information for as long as it is needed to fulfill the identified purposes.

  • Vercel: Hosts the website and application.
  • Supabase: Provides the database, authentication, and storage services.
  • ImprovMX: Processes your emails for the forwarding service when you enable it.
  • Brevo: Manages the contact list for essential service-related communications. Your `@theslow.net` alias is added to this list only when you enable email forwarding.

Your personal information is retained only as long as your account is active. When you delete your account from the dashboard, your data is permanently removed from my primary database and our authentication provider.

5. Your Access to Your Information

You have the right to access and update your personal information. You can manage your SlowNet Name, site content, and email forwarding settings directly on your dashboard. You can also permanently delete your account and all associated data from the dashboard at any time.

6. Safeguards

I take the security of your information seriously. I rely on the robust security infrastructure of trusted service partners like Supabase and Vercel. Access to your account is protected via secure OAuth protocols, and I have implemented Row-Level Security policies in our database to ensure your data is strictly isolated and cannot be accessed by other users.

7. Openness and Challenging Compliance

I am committed to being open about my policies and practices. This privacy policy is intended to be clear and easy to understand. If you have any questions, concerns, or complaints about my compliance with these principles, please contact me directly at contact@austinvc.ca.
